New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is an important "first step" toward a great start at Kapiolani Community College (KCC). We planned the orientation so you will be prepared for your first semester of college. Your family and friends are welcome to participate as they are an important part of your success at KCC.

A successful first semester is important to a successful college career. The orientation will assist you with the transition to a new learning environment and to a new campus. It will provide information that will acquaint you with our policies, procedures, and resources, and it will help you make smart decisions.

Benefits of Attending the Orientation

With our assistance, you will learn how to choose your first semester courses and how to prepare for an advising session with your counselor. You will learn about:

  • Common college vocabulary and procedures
  • How to select courses based on your COMPASS English and math placement test scores
  • Registration procedures
  • Important school dates
  • Student responsibilities and faculty expectations
  • Differences between high school and college learning
  • Key campus resources and co-curricular activities

You will meet other new students and some of our faculty and counselors as well as go on a campus tour.

Orientation Dates

New student orientations are held prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters. Information about the orientation is included in your acceptance letter. Each session is approximately 90 minutes long.

If you cannot attend, our counselors are available for individual conferences, via email or the phone, to answer your questions and help you select courses. To find your counselor, see the "Advising & Counseling Directory" under the Related Links section.

Preparation for a Productive Orientation

Bring the following with you:

  • COMPASS English and math test report. Scores and how they are used for course selection will be explained. For more information, see "COMPASS Placement Testing" under the Related Links section.

  • The Schedule of Classes. If you don't have one, a copy will be provided at the orientation. For more information, see "Schedule of Classes (SOC)" under the Related Links section.

  • A pen or pencil and a highlighter.
