Your Body and Your Health I (42 hours lecture and lab)

Basic knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the upper and lower extremities, including associated bones, muscles and nerves. Principles of Anatomy and Physiology to increase strength and stamina and in providing massage therapy to upper and lower extremities. Basic medical terminology will be covered.

Massage Practice I: Application and Theory (45 hours lecture/lab)

Knowledge, understanding and use of appropriate medical terminology. Learn correct positioning of clients for application of general massage techniques. Learn appropriate draping of patients for privacy. Apply principles of good posture and body mechanics to reduce the risk of injury to practitioner and client. Learn consistent application of basic principles for documentation of massage applications. Explain rationale and learn correct use of superficial heat and cold. Discussion of sanitation practice and requirements for a massage establishment.

Basic knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the trunk and internal organs, including heart, lungs, digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system, and endocrine system. Principles of Anatomy and Physiology to increase strength and stamina and in providing massage therapy to the abdomen, trunk and back. Continuation of basic medical terminology.

Massage Practice II: Advanced Application and Theory (45 hours lecture/lab)

Learn general relaxation massage techniques to include effleurage, petrissage, compression, friction, tapotement, and vibration. Learn consistent and correct use of SOAP notes in documentation of massage applications. Explain and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of anatomical relationships significant for competent performance of massage. Perform required number of competent demonstrations to achieve competency rating.

Continuation of basic medical terminology.

Knowledge and understanding of effective communication techniques. Importance and knowledge of socio-cultural differences and values in massage practice. Basic principles for documentation of massage applications. Recognize ethical behavior in massage practice situations. Learn, understand and apply legal liability in massage practice. Apply correct principles of business practice.

Massage Internship I (50 hours clinical)

Application and knowledge gained in the previous courses (HSMTh 100 through 117). Perform massage skills on clients under the supervision of a licensed mentor. Perform application of massage to the satisfaction of the mentor.
