Admission Procedure

Thank you for your interest in the ARCH program. This Application Procedure Checklist should be used to make sure you have met the requirements for application to the program. A completed checklist, application, transcripts and other required documents must be received by the last date of the application period.

The Nursing Information Sessions will give you details on the application process and programs we offer and answer most or all of your questions. After you have attended a Nursing Information Session you are welcome to come in for walk-in advising in Kopiko 201 on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. to Noon and on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Step 1 : Submit a UH System Application Form (SAF)

Submit a UH System Application Form (SAF) (except continuing KCC students). See the "Forms section to download forms. List ARCH (Adult Residential Care Home) as your desired major.

First time students need to also submit a TB clearance and record of two MMR immunizations. Applicants born before 1956 and Hawaii high school graduates need to submit only the TB clearance.

Step 2 : Submit the KCC Admissions Application/Checklist for ARCH

All students applying to the ARCH program must complete the KCC Admissions Application/Checklist for ARCH.

The application forms are also available at the Kekaulike Information and Service Center (KISC) in ‘Ilima 102.

Step 3 : Reading Ability

ARCH applicants need to read at about the 8th grade level. There are several ways to meet the reading requirement for this program:

  • a Compass Placement Test score of 57 or higher OR
  • Completion of ENG 21 (or equivalent) or higher with a "C" within the past 10 years OR
  • Graduation from a US High School or possession of a GED Certificate

Step 4 : Official College Transcripts

Official college transcripts must be sent directly to the KISC office from other campuses for English courses. It is not necessary to request a transcript for Kapi'olani Community College courses. Submit a Transcript Evaluation Request Form for non-KCC courses.

Step 5 : Verification of Work Experience Form

Submit the Nurse Aide Work Experience Verification form signed by your employer verifying the dates of employment, average number of hours per week, and whether you satisfactorily performed the duties on the list. Have it sent to "Employment verification" inbox located in Kopiko 201.

Work must be done in a SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility), ICF (Intermediate Care Facility), or home health agency or hospital. As approved by the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH). For a list of the DOH approved list of facilities, please follow the link located in the "Related Links" section.  Assisted living, day care/health care home and foster care experience are not counted. A minimum of 6 months full-time (or equivalent hours) or completion of the community college NURS 16 Nurse Aide Training course is required before taking the courses.

Step 6: Selection and Acceptance

Residents of the State of Hawaii receive selection priority for this high demand program.

Selection is made on a first qualified, first accepted basis. Criteria include submittal of application and ASAP form and satisfactory reading ability and work experience.

Course recency. English course must be taken within 10 years of admission.

Documents indicating completion of requirements (i.e., official academic transcripts) must be submitted.

A GPR (grade point ratio) of 2.0 or higher for courses taken at Kapi'olani Community College is required; you must not be not on probation or suspension at Kapi'olani Community College.
